Gym Fees for 2008 - Wednesday nights

Hi Gators

For the period from January 9th to April 2nd except March 5th (March break), there are a total of 12 Wednesday nights. I am going to ask a credit for the night in October when the gym was unavailable and for Wednesday Dec 12th.

12 X $25 = $300 - $50 (credit) = $250.00 divided by 2(Gators et Femmes Fatales)= $125.00 per team which comes to 21.00 per player for us.

I am waiting a confirmation from the Femmes Fatales to see if they want to continue to play against us every Wednesday (I think they do). I need to sign the contract and pay in advance so I will do it next week. Since we're going to have a long break with no tournaments and we'll just meet again on January 9th.

Merry Christmas !! See you Gators in 2008.

VNB SENIOR OPEN - TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

Hey Gators !!!!!

Click here to see the tournament schedule
(Womens Senior B on Page 4)

I asked VNB if the one-hour captains meeting could be skipped so we would not finish so late on Saturday. There could be an online forum instead... I am awaiting an answer.

See you later GATORS !!

Some Slides

Here are some videos of some pretty good slides by Middle Hitters, with some help from the Off-Side.

Video number 1 has a good example of some foot work and a good cross hit. She jumps on her left foot (which you need to do to get the angle shot).

Video number 2 shows how the Slide can be done with the Off-Side. It's called a split. The Middle Hitter goes for the slide while the Off-Side (watch blonde #11) goes for a middle attack by stepping in to the 3 position after the Middle Hitter has crossed. Note that the setter could have set Middle or Off-Side. Carole L, you may want to try this Wednesday.

Video number 3 is a drill for setting the slide. As a blocker, you may want to set up so the slider has an open line and take away the cross.

USA VS Japan - Word Cup '07

They're giants.

Call the Ball!!!

Call it loud, early and often and with a tone in your voice that makes it absolutely clear to everyone around you that they should get out of your way because this ball is YOURS.

And make sure you call it early enough, preferably before it crosses the net, so that the other players can stay clear of your path and get into an on-help position.

If another player calls the ball at the same time as you and with the same high level of certainty as you, you should do one of two things; if there is time you should call the other players name and tell that player to go for the ball as you back-off and give that player room to play the ball, or, if there is not sufficient time or if you and the other player are already almost on top of each other, you should continue to play the ball.

Remember, if one or both of you play the ball, you will have a much better chance at making the point than if neither of you plays the ball.

TEAMS WHO COMMUNICATE WELL CALL THE BALL.

Serve Receive Ain't For Sissies

Here are 5 volleyball tips elite athletes use when Serve Receiving. Now you can easily perform these volleyball skills to improve your technique during games and volleyball tournaments.

1. Read the Server's Body Position
When a server is ready to serve - they usually give you some indication where they are planning to serve. Checking their lower body, their feet and especially their hip position you get some clues as to whether they want to serve cross court or down the line.
Also check out where their shoulders are facing and where there tossing arm is - this will give you additional clues. A lot of servers when they want to serve a short ball to the front row hitters on the opposite side - MANY times they step right up to the serving line as close as they can. This is a pretty good indication that a short serve is coming. So when you see that adjust accordingly by taking a step closer to the net that you cover any short serves that come in your area.

2. Stay Low
Once the referee's whistle blows DON"T STAND UP! Stay in "shoulders hunched/slightly crouched" ready position in order to serve receive. Why?
a) Because if the server serves you deep or short its easier for you to move forwards and backwards - if you are in a slightly crouched position. b) By standing up, the ball will more than likely hit you in the chest. As the serve crosses the net Stay
Low - while preparing your body position and platform to serve receive.

3. Talk
Be ready to take responsibility for balls that are served to you or in your area - by calling "MINE" in a loud clear voice so your teammates know that you WANT that ball and only you will pass that ball. It allows your teammates to set up early for whatever they need to do next.
Communicate what serve you think is coming. If I see someone "toeing" the line- by this I mean stepping up really close to the server's line then I will tell my beach partner OR my indoor teammates in a loud voice "Watch out for the short serve!" This mentally helps you AND your teammates to be ready to move quickly if the short serve comes. This way everybody on the volleyball court KNOWS and is aware of the short ball possibly coming.
You've also made the server aware of the fact that you know what they are about to do so it puts more pressure on them to concentrate.

4. Focus on the Volleyball
Once you've checked out the server's body position and where they look like they are serving and called it out to your teammates...once the whistle blows Focus on the BALL while its in the server's tossing hand.
Once the server tosses the ball they really can't change much of anything else so I visibly TRACK that ball from their hands when they contact the ball across the net and I track it right into my arms. I follow by watching the ball with my eyes right into my serve receive platform. Really Focusing on the ball keeps me from being surprised and moving at the last minute once that ball crosses the net to my side of the court. I am already visibly and mentally following that ball out of the server's hands so when it gets to the volleyball net and then crosses to my side its easy for me to move my feet and get to position to make a great pass.

5. Early Positioning -Get Stopped!
Don't do two things at once. Don't be passing and running at the same time! Your passes usually won't go to your setter BUT instead will go immediately over the net. Get to the spot First on the court where you see the ball is going to cross the net and land in your area even if this means that you may only need a side step or two steps or may even have to run to get to a further spot away from you Get THERE first then GET STOPPED -get your Platform out- then make the pass. Make sure you do this in 2 separate movements.

So remember Get to Your Spot Quickly - Beat the ball there - Get Stopped - Make the Pass!

Nov. 3rd GATORS Tournament Update

It seems not enough teams have paid their VNB registration for this season as of yet. VNB will only let registered teams officially sign-up for tournaments. Last year, teams told VNB they wanted to start the season earlier. But it seems they didn't think they would have to pay earlier.

So here's the situation: We're hosting this tournament next week and we only have five teams who are signed-up. The deadline for tournament registration is Monday. But we're pretty sure that can be extended to Wednesday.

Bottom line is, we can have a tournament with 5 teams, but there's still the matter of paying the gym, refs, etc. We'll have to calculate over this weekend if we can cover our expenses with only 5 teams.

Have a good weekend.

Calling Touch on the Other Team

One of the most frustrating things for hitters is to go up, blast away, have the hit go off opponent´s fingers and out of bounds, only to discover no one saw the touch.

Here´s a way to get a few calls you might not get otherwise:

Simply call "touch" the instant you see them at the net. Oftentimes, the referee will hear that and instantly signal a touch. If the ball is close to the net, it´s sometimes hard to know who actually called the touch, especially in a noisy gym.

vendredi 19 octobre 2007

A Simple Hitting Strategy

Here´s a way to up your outside hitting percentage by simply making your opposing blocker "play you honestly." The strategy is simple, but not used nearly enough. All you have to do is to always, without exception, hit your first ball down the line.
Sounds simple, right? But what it does is this: blockers are taught to block angle until the opponent hits the line, since 90% of hits are blasted angle. So if you hit your very first hit down the line, it instantly shows your opponent you can do it, and that you WILL do it. They must now play you straight on, to guard the line, which will open up your angle again.

Another hint: if your first line shot goes down, hit your second one down the line, too. The reason? Many players assume that a line shot was actually an accident, a ball that wasn't hit right, in effect. They´ll tell their blockers to keep blocking angle until their opponent hits two down the line. So you´ll get away with a second shot down the line, as well.
It goes without saying that if they never adjust, keep hitting the line all day. Either way, your percentage could increased dramatically.

Time To Play

The survey is now done and Tina has the results. She'll take care of the rest.

On November 3rd, we're hosting a VNB tournament in Barachois. That's less that 3 weeks away. So it's now time to concentrate on your game.

We have a few practices games left, as well as a "real" practice this Friday in Barachois.

See you there

Thanks

SURVEY OF THE DAY #1

Hi GATORS

Since we don't have much time to talk about it during the practices/games, I thought it would be a good idea to do a little survey to find out the preferences concerning our HLC Warm-Up sweaters. I made the questions based on suggestions heard so far.

Tina will look at all the answers submitted and make the final decision for the GATORS.

Please answer the 6 following questions :

1- On the BACK of the sweater, would you prefer to see "GATORS" in :
a)Silver
b)White
c)No preference

2- On the FRONT of the sweater, opposite to the HLC logo, what would you want to see:
a)The letter "G"
b)A volley ball
c)A gator logo
d) No preference

3- Surrounding the logo/letter/volleyball, what would you like to read:
a)SHEDIAC GATORS
b)GATORS
c)Nothing

4- Which logo would you prefer 1,2,3 or 4 ? Please refer to the logos posted above. Just look at the GATOR itself and not the full logo since it will be modified. For example, logo #1 would be a GREEN crest with the name 'GATORS' and the shape in WHITE. The logo #2 would be a WHITE Gator on a light GREEN circle. The logo #3 and #4 would just be the GATOR itself in Green.

5- Other than our team name, would you like to add something else on the BACK of the sweater ?
a)A volleyball
b)No
c)Something else ? Please indicate your suggestion

6- If we had the opportunity to order the matching pants from the HLC catalog and individually pay for it, would you be interested:
a)yes
b)no

Please click on "commentaires" at the bottom of this message to post your reply. Select "anonymous" if you are not registered.

Thanks GATORS !!
Have a nice week end

2 Quick Tips : Hitting and Tipping

1- Waiting to Kill

Here’s a formula for outside hitters:

On outside attacks, don´t go half speed and meet the ball at the net. Wait a second longer and then EXPLODE to the ball. The consequence is more energy which means a higher jump and harder hit.

2- Dump to #1

Setters and hitters can learn something from this tip on tipping:

When dumping the ball into your opponents court, consider dumping deep into position #1 (right back). It will cause the opposing setter problems, since they´ll they have to turn to see their teammate´s pass.

Volleyball Skills: How to Win in Warm Ups

By this time you've had your team prep talk right? Your coach has told you pretty much who does what on the other team. It’s before the game now and you probably have the time. Watch!

a. Watch and Identify who you might have to block in front of you.
b. Watch how they hit the ball.
c. Does she hit on the way down?
d. Is her armswing slow?
e. Does she have a fast or slow wrist snap in other words does her hit go down or go long in the court.
f. Does she always face cross court when she wants to hit cross court or does she hit over her shoulder to disguise her shot.

Does she always call for a high ball set or does she hit a shoot set as well? Look for clues in warm up as to what your opposing hitters do, you should be already thinking about how you need to block that person or how late you need to wait in your block squat before you jump against a particular hitter.

Do the same in the serving warm-up. As you are shagging your ball - keep an eye on WHERE members of the opposing starting team tend to always serve. If the left side hitter has served most of her warm up serves cross court - you can bet that she isnt going to pull too many surprises in the game and do something completely different than what you saw her do in warm up. Players love to warm up the skill that they perform the best in warm ups. If you are alert you can anticipate alot of what a player is going to do -during the game.

If she serves 5 cross court and 1 down the line - what are you going to tell your team to look out for- that cross court serve first-right?
The last few minutes of the warm up and before you line up to start the game YOU can be talking to your teammates and share with them what your observations are. "Hey Gal Sal just hit the last 5 balls cross court whoever is blocking her be ready for that..." Why is this important?

Shark Sense; Getting in Touch With Your Inner Shark
1. This shows the coach that you are thinking. ...and sharing -which makes their job easier. And let's face it brownie points are Always good in that area.
2. You are also less likely to be taken by surprise during the game by what happens on the court because you've started Looking and Analyzing (aka warming up your brain) in warm-ups BEFORE the game even started.

So I'm not keeping my head down, grooving to the pre-game warm up music and concentrating on "just...doing my thing by just shagging and running back to hit" in warm-ups.

I'm aware, alert and helping my team by seeing, sharing and communicating what the opposing members of the other team are doing. This volleyball skill is preparing me mentally to Anticipate what is going to happen.

That's how you Win in Warmups!

Saturday's Fundraiser Schedule

Here's Saturday's tournament schedule. I hope everyone can stick around to give a hand until the tournament is over. Carole L. usually goes to the school around 4:00 on Friday to get the gym ready for Saturday. I can't go this time. Can Tina or Carole lend a hand with this since you're not too far?

HOSTING OF VNB TOURNAMENTS - SEASON 2007-2008

Hi Gators

I sent a request to Volleyball New Brunswick for the hosting of tournaments for the upcoming season. The dates I requested are November 3, 2007 and February 9, 2008. I booked the gym, I will take care of the VNB administrative stuff, volunteers for scoring/scoresheets, etc... but the team needs 2 volunteers who could work together and take care of the prizes for these two VNB tournaments. Anyone interested ?

A Tip for Blocking, Defense - ANTICIPATE

Tracking your hitter is very important - to determine where they are going to hit, and to time your block jump. This way you can see and ANTICIPATE where the hitter is going to hit.

As soon as the ball is set and you realize that the ball is coming to an attacker that you are responsible for, your first step should be to the area that you are responsible for covering - in order to move to the correct area to block, take your eyes completely off of the ball (this is very difficult to get yourself to do) and watch the attacker's approach. This will help you to line up perfectly with the attacker.

If you see that your hitter's spike approach is coming toward you at an angle - then more than likely they are going to hit cross court, so you should line up in front of them to block their cross court. Line up to block the extension of their arm.
If your hitter's approach is in a straight line then they will likely hit down the line and you need to make sure that your body is squared up in front of them ready to block the extension of their arm.

For setters and off-sides, setting a good block communicates to the middle blocker where he/she has to close to. If you are going to move at the last second to your area the middle blocker will either crash into you or leave a huge seam in the block (more likely) and your block will be very unstable, leaving your defense for target practice.

Setting the block also communicates to your back row where they need to move to as the play develops. They need to cover the portion of the court that is outside the shadow of the block.

What's the shadow of the block, you say? The shadow of the block is the area behind the "perfect block" which doesn't/shouldn't need to be covered by defensive players. It's the spot where the opponent hitter can't hit because of the block. That's why, your defense should cover portion of the court that is outside the shadow.

What do YOU think about this?

Top 5 Volleyball Secrets That Make a BIG Difference With Your Serve Receive

The serve receive is the key to running your team's offense. Here are 5 volleyball tips that will make a BIG difference in your volleyball passing performance.

1) Keep a straight platform, by keeping elbows straight. (just like this picture)
One of the biggest mistakes players make when passing is bending their elbows to pass the ball. If you review this photo too you will notice that the player's "platform" aka the inside of their forearms that she presents... are so straight as a board you could use her arms as a flat table to eat on.
Bent elbows means less ball accuracy while straight arms gives more ball control and accuracy to guide the ball to the "setter" target.

2) Track the ball visually all the way into your arms.

There are alot of things to look at when the server has the ball just before the ref blows the whistle. There can be alot of things to be distracted by if you don't learn to concentrate and narrow your focus. What do you focus on? Once the server takes the volleyball in their hands and positions themselves to indicate where and how they are going to serve and then they start bouncing it in anticipation of serving it...at this point most elite athletes I know focus 125% ONLY on the ball in the server's hands. From this point on your eyes and mind should see and focus on nothing but the ball ALL THE way INTO your arms.
Track the ball all the way into your arms visually ...so that you can see your straight platform.

3) Don't break your arms apart.
No matter how hard or easy the serve...keep your arms together when you pass. Fight to maintain good passing technique. You have to fight the temptation of breaking your arms together especially when you are passing on the move. That's why it's important to pass with your feet first, get stopped then use the correct technique. Don't be lazy just because it seems like an easy pass to make.

4) Pass with both feet on the volleyball court floor.
Don't jump bump. Very easy reasoning...when you are in the air you have much less to no control of your body and/or the ball but if your feet remain on the ground you can make small adjustments (maybe an extra step forward or backward if needed) to control the outcome of the serve receive 99% better.

5) Pass with your feet (first) not with your arms.

This sounds a little tricky to understand but what this means is that you need to get into the habit of getting to the ball first by getting your feet behind the ball, first, no matter where it is.

A Look at the Coach's Foot: Gross

This is why I will wear an ankle brace from now on when I play volleyball.

Remember to use this website to post comments, and anything you want to say about the team, events, your game, what you want to work on for the next practice, etc.

Also, if you have any questions about your game, such as blocking, hitting, communication, whatever (I don't know everything) I can find online articles to answer anything you throw at me. So you should take advantage of that. I will post everything you need to know on this website.

Here's an intresting website. It showcases a young volleyball player who's using the web to promote her skills (to university or college recruiters) to attract attention to her. She has videos showing all her skills as an agressive setter.

À bientôt.

Practice Night and Gym Costs for 2007

GATORS UPDATES

We are going to play against the Senior B team Femmes Fatales every Wednesday night.

A commitment was made with them for the period from September 12th to December 12th for every Wednesday instead of every second Wednesday like we did the previous seasons. They will pay half of the cost with us. It will cost each of the Gators $25 for the period before Christmas. Please bring this amount as soon as possible since I paid the amount in full last week.

If the Gators wish to have a practice with drills with Stephane during the season, it will have to be scheduled on another night. We can schedule a practice if we want to practice and improve specific skills and techniques.

We now have 5 teams registered for our fundraiser on September 29th : Cougars, Gators, Oxygen, Femmes Fatales, U18.

See you all on Wednesday !
